Do the recycling!

Florence loves tourists who love Florence

Every year Florence hosts millions of tourists, which visit the city to enjoy its wonders.
However, for a conscious vacation, you have to know how to dispose of waste and how recycling collection works! It’s enough to follow a few simple rules to keep Florence’s beauty intact.

You can find the flyer in 5 languages here:

Recycling collection

Recycling collection is different from city to city because the Recycling plants vary.
Recycling collection in Florence is currently being improved. Citizens, as well as tourists, collect the 5 main waste fractions separately, each being characterized by a different color:

  • brown for organic;
  • yellow for paper and cardboard;
  • blue for plastic-metal-polystyrene-tetrapak packaging and containers;
  • green for glass;
  • grey for non-recyclable waste.

You can find the recycling collection guide that shows how to dispose of each waste fraction here:

Still having doubts? Download JUNKER, the app which makes your recycling collection easier. You can use it to search for objects and find out what materials they are made of, receive notifications to remind you of the Door to Door collection days, consult the map for the services closest to you, and read useful information and tips.

Firenze Città Circolare

Firenze Città Circolare is the new Waste Plan designed by the City of Florence and Alia Servizi Ambientali SpA, the company that manages waste and recycling in 58 municipalities in central Tuscany.

In Florence, the Plan includes two kinds of recycling, both active in different parts of the city:

DOOR TO DOOR
It is active in the municipal area of Florence and in the hills surrounding the city. Citizens deliver their waste directly to their doorsteps, sorted into the 5 fractions mentioned above, and according to a weekly calendar (available here and on Junker). Glass is the only waste which is still collected through bins along the street.

DIGITAL OR UNDERGROUND BINS
In all other areas of Florence, the collection works through street bins, which may be underground or digital. To deliver your waste, you must use the A-PASS, the electronic key that opens the bins.
Along the streets you will find 5 bins: brown for organic waste, yellow for paper and cardboard, blue for packaging and plastic-metal-polystyrene-tetrapak containers, grey for non-recyclable waste, and green for glass.
The green bins are always open; all other bins are equipped with the electronic opening system.

Find out in which streets the different collection methods are active by looking at the map and follow Alia Servizi Ambientali’s YouTube channel for tutorials on how to collect waste properly.

Paper and cardboard collection in the historic district

In the historic district of Florence, paper and cardboard are collected door to door. Please crush boxes, newspapers, cardboards, and all other paper waste and put them in front of your door on the days and times indicated in the PAPER CALENDAR.
